Skateboard Adventures!

Hi friends! It’s been a while since I’ve posted a fun post, so here we are.

So as some of you may know, I tend to do things that can be considered pretty…questionable. My reputation must be getting around because a kid recently asked “What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done?”

My immediate answer to that was “I recently bought a skateboard!”

Yep, I bought a skateboard. But there’s a story behind it!

So, I’d gone to a sports store recently to get insoles for my shoes (my arches are really flat so I wanted to see if I could change that). I got the arches, and then went downstairs to see how much a Bosu Ball would cost (I don’t know if you guys remember, but I love that thing). The first thing you see when you go downstairs, though, is skateboards. I was with Ben at the time, who jokingly said “Do you wanna buy a skateboard?” I said something like “No, I’ll probably die.” To which he said something like “Do you want to at least try it?”

Now, there was a staff member on the floor who’d happened to overhear us. He said something like “Why not try one out? I’ll help you!” That was all the convincing I needed (it’s not all that hard to get me to do/try something crazy).

So he picked up this nice skateboard that had pretty big wheels that were also pretty soft. He later explained that big and soft wheels are the best option since they create a little more friction than harder wheels would, which helps the beginner avoid getting thrown off.

Anyway so he pulled out this beginner-style skateboard, put it down, and helped me get on. He tells me to just stand for a bit, so I did. And I didn’t die! It actually reminded me of a Bosu Ball because of the way that it rocked when I leaned slightly forward or backwards. The staff member explained that rocking like that is how we turn the skateboard while we ride it.

So by now I was already convinced that this thing was the best toy I’ve ever played with. I was still standing on the skateboard (on my own, I might add), when the staff member says “Alright, let’s try moving a bit.”

That’s when I probably should’ve said “No thanks” and gotten off. But, me being me, I instead said “Okay!” So the staff member pulled me along slowly and told me when to rock forwards and backwards to avoid obstacles in the store.

Believe me when I tell you, I was over the moon! I was riding a skateboard, and I still hadn’t died! It felt amazing, so I decided right then and there that I would get one.

That brings us back to the present. I’d gone onto Amazon and gotten myself a cheap board to mess around with. I figured that if I liked riding it, and could get pretty decent at using it without getting too injured, I’ll spend a little more money to get a better one.

This is my skateboard! It’s small, but that’s because I didn’t want to pay more money for a better one without knowing if I’d like it. Photo of a small-ish black skateboard that is round with a point at the top and slims down at the bottom. The skateboard is leaning against a wall with the wheel side showing. The underside of the skateboard is shiny and has a fire design on it. My tuxedo cat, Rygel, is on the left looking at the skateboard.

And look, I haven’t gotten injured! I haven’t even fallen off of it yet, so that’s a good start. I mostly just stand on it in my apartment and rock back and forth, as well as side to side. I do it in an area that has walls I can grab if and when I need to.

Take a look!

So far, it’s going great. Stay tuned for progress updates that I’ll be posting as both blogs and instagram posts!

Also, I want to hear from you! What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done? And have you ever ridden a skateboard? If so, how’d it go? Do you have any tips? If you haven’t, would you? Send me an email or comment on the instagram post if you want.

And, just because, here’s some more photos:

Rygel got to try it out: Rygel is standing on the skateboard looking somewhat annoyed at the camera

Now I’m just posing with the board because why not:

Rygel decided to photobomb my shot. Melissa is standing on the skateboard and leaning one arm against the wall. Rygel is in the photo walking by.

Here’s one without Rygel. I should add that standing like this on a skateboard is terrifying because if I lean slightly too hard on the arm that’s leaning on the wall, the board would be pushed out from under me and I’d fall off. Melissa is standing on the skateboard with an arm leaning on the wall again but this time there isn’t a cat walking by.

This one was Ben’s idea! I love how the shot came out though. Melissa is hanging barely above the ground with one hand and the other is holding the skateboard.

Enjoy!
